Application/Cost

Application

The program is open to first-year students in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Envionmental Design who are interested in natural sciences and the environment. To apply, interested students should indicate Baker Residential Academic Program as their first choice on their Housing application as early as possible. Admission to Baker RAP is determined by the receipt date of the housing request and is first-come, first served.

Financial Aid/Scholarships

Students on financial aid who anticipate a need for financial assistance to participate in the Baker RAP should call or write the Office of Financial Aid to request that their budget be adjusted to include the Baker Program fee. Eligibility for aid will then be increased by the amount of the annual Baker Program fee. Need-based scholarships that help defray part of the cost of the RAP fee are available for both incoming freshmen and sophomores who stay in the BRAP program their second year. Information on application procedures is available in the BRAP office from Claire Figel.

Cost

Participation in Baker RAP requires a $850 nonrefundable program fee per academic year (14-15 rate) to cover in-residence instruction, academic enrichment, advising, and administration of the academic program.

Registration

New freshmen must first apply for the Baker Residential Academic Program (RAP) on their Housing Reservation form. A registration packet is mailed to all freshmen accepted as residents of Baker Hall during the first week of May. The registration packet consists of a welcome letter, contract, and a complete list of fall courses.

Requirements for Baker RAP are that students take at least one 3-credit course per semester in the program. Student are strongly encouraged to take at least one natural science course in the program, as it is our central focus. Most Baker RAP courses fulfill core requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences. RAP courses are identical in content to the same class taught outside of Baker, with the class size limited to 18 students.

Students may mail, fax, or email their RAP contracts with their course requests to the program administrator. Seats in RAP classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students are encouraged to attend one of the summer orientation sessions at which time they will receive detailed information about the program and confirmation of their RAP class(es). If students need to change their Baker RAP class after meeting with their assigned academic advisor, every effort is made to accommodate this request either after orientation or during drop/add the first week of classes.
